■ The so-called “blood explosion” which punctuates the conclusion of Akira Kurosawa’s 1962 movie Sanjuro remains one of the most memorable and influential special effects in film history. Production designer Yoshiro Muraki would later recall this scene was filmed in a single take. No such effect had ever been attempted before, as movies of the time rarely showed violence with graphic detail. Filled with uncertainty, Muraki worried the blood spray he’d rigged up wouldn’t impress Kurosawa, so he added an extra 30 pounds of pressure to the fluid pump. At the moment the pump was activated, the additional pressure caused the compressor hose attached to actor Tatsuya Nakadai to blow a coupling which created a slight, unintentional delay before the fake blood began to spray, and caused a much larger gush of fluid than planned. It sprayed so powerfully Nakadai claimed it almost lifted him off the ground. His heart sinking, as he believed the delay and over-pressure had ruined the effect, Muraki nervously glanced at director Akira Kurosawa, but Kurosawa only nodded in approval.
A story written for sudrien in bits and pieces from August 2016 to June 2017. Involves the Condesce being transported to Earth in a more humanoid body, and forced into a late 1800s freak show act as a contortionist. Inspired by these pics here. These pages were done way back in the armpit between 2013 & 2014 for the Vertebrae Anthology, and today I opened the (shiny, sexy) book expecting to cringe so hard my collarbones became hair accessories.
You know what’s sad? I actually still like these a lot. I’d much rather they existed than not, y’know? I like how many plot points I shoveled into the 10-page limit. I like that it inspires me to do more, better comics.
This story is indeed mostly true. I totally went on a bus trip with my grandma, I totally had to listen to a dude who wears sunglasses indoors, and things were totally done with an angel figurine. Maybe not those specific things, but they were equally unpleasant.
basically, i think the general rule of thumb is: if someone REALLY wants the blood that’s inside of your body, and they’re like… a vampire, or a dracula, or some sort of mansquito, then that’s probably okay. a dracula and a mansquito are made for removing things like blood and swords from inside your body.
that’s basically fine.
if something wants to get at your blood, and they’re, say, some kind of murdersaurus, or maybe a really big frog, that’s where the problems start to arise. a really frog is not made for removing blood, and your blood knows this, which is why it is so vehement about wanting to stay IN your body instead of coming out.
unfortunately this will not deter a really big frog, because a really big frog is full of things like prizes, and value, and quite a lot of hatred, and it would REALLY rather like to replace any and all of those things with your blood, and basically by any means possible.
